Eisenhower Expressway reopened in Westchester after 9-hour closure for fatal police investigation

The Eisenhower Expressway was closed in both directions in Westchester about 10 a.m. Thursday morning for a joint federal and Illinois State Police investigation into an apparently suspicious fatal incident, police said.

It’s unclear exactly what happened but the Cook County medical examiner’s office confirmed one person has died, and WGN9 reported that a bomb squad responded to the scene. Illinois State Police said they were assisting a federal investigation at the scene.

State police said the incident happened about 10:05 a.m. in the westbound lanes of Interstate 290 near Mannheim Road.

The following lanes were closed, according to police: eastbound and westbound lanes on I-290; Mannheim Road to I-290; Mannheim Road over I-290; eastbound I-88 to eastbound I-290. All lanes had reopened by 7 p.m.

During the closure, drivers were urged to avoid the area and take alternate routes.

No other information was available late Thursday afternoon.
