It’s hard enough to win any Emmy, so what Matthew Rhys accomplished on Monday, Sept. 14 – winning Emmys for lead actor in a comedy series and for a limited series – is truly impressive.
How impressive? Rhys is the first to win Emmys as lead actor in two different categories in the same year, winning the comedy award for “Widow’s Bay” and the limited series Emmy for “The Beast In Me.”
“This is purely because of the twisted mind of Katie Dippold,” Rhys said of the “Widow’s Bay” creator and showrunner. “Her genius really does live in the recesses of her disturbed brain.”
A few minutes later, it was Dippold’s turn to accept the Emmy for writing for a comedy series for “Widow’s Bay,” giving the Apple TV series its fourth win in the first half of the Emmy telecast.
“I always told myself if I ever won one of these things I’d be really humble,” Dippold said as she started her acceptance speech. “But standing here now, I promise you no one will ever step foot in my home without seeing this thing. I will have it lit with a spotlight. I will create a system of mirrors to make sure you can see it no matter where you are.”
Actress Sally Field won her fourth Emmy, and first since 2007, for lead actress in a limited series, anthology series or TV movie for the Netflix movie “Remarkably Bright Creatures.”
“This is not supposed to happen, OK?” Field said of her later-in-career Emmy win. “I loved this project from page 1. The story of an old woman, a young man and an octopus doesn’t come around very often.”
“Late Night with Stephen Colbert” won best variety show for its final season, with Colbert thanking the more than 200 people who worked on the late-night series and the entertainers in the room who’d been guests on his show for many years.
“I’ve interviewed at least a thousand of you,” Colbert said of the famous faces in the audience. “Thank you for coming on to talk to his idiot. I want you to know you were all the perfect guest, the segment went great, and I’m sorry I forgot to play your clip.”
