A former top engineer at the Chicago-based Big Ten Network is accused of using a company credit card to buy electronic devices and sell them for his own profit.
Weston Goldstein worked as the senior director of engineering and had access to the company’s credit card to buy business-related items, which required employees to identify the reasons for such transactions, according to a complaint filed Thursday in federal court.
Goldstein bought about $4 million worth of electronic devices that he falsely reported as legitimate business purchases between 2016 and 2023, the complaint states.
In September 2021, Goldstein allegedly spent about $12,000 of the company’s money on electronic devices from CDW Direct for his own use.
He also convinced his co-workers to give him access to other company credit cards that he used for personal expenses, the complaint alleges.
It’s unclear when he left the Big Ten Network and why. Spokespersons for the network did not respond to a request for comment.
Goldstein is charged with wire fraud in federal court. An arraignment hearing is scheduled for Aug. 4.
