Athrun, who is autistic, was last seen close to a boating lake and playpark at the West Shore Beach in Llandudno, Wales, on Saturday afternoon.
Police mounted an “extensive” search involving teams of officers, search and rescue dogs and helicopters and say they are carrying out a “high-risk missing person enquiry.”
But despite dozens of emergency service professionals continuing the search on Sunday they are continuing to appeal for Athrun.
North Wales Police said: “Extensive searches have taken place looking for Athrun and continue today with specialist search officers from several agencies.
These include land, water and airborne searches.
“At this time the public are asked to remain vigilant, but not to place themselves at risk by attempting to search areas which will already have been completed by professionals.
“Athrun was last seen at approximately 2pm yesterday afternoon on West Shore Beach in Llandudno, close to the boating lake and playpark.
He is described as 16-years-old, with short dark hair and is approx. 6ft tall and of slim build.”
They added that Athrun was “wearing blue and white patterned swim shorts” and “may walk with an unusual gait”.
An earlier appeal had posted an image of Athrun wearing ear defenders but police later confirmed he was not wearing them when he went missing.
The force added: “We continue to treat the investigation as a high-risk missing person enquiry and are committing significant resources to the search with assistance from a number of partner agencies including the Coastguard, NPAS (National Police Air Service) and SARDA (Search and Rescue Dogs Association).”
Detective Chief Inspector Simon Kneale said: “I would ask the public to remain vigilant in and around the Llandudno area.
“We would like to thank people for their assistance with the searches, but we would appeal for members of the public not to put themselves at risk.
“Significant areas of Llandudno have already been searched, and these searches continue.
“Officers continue to support Athrun’s family while attempts to locate him continue.
“I would ask that anyone with dash cam footage in the vicinity of West Shore between 12pm & 6pm reviews it to check for any sightings of Athrun.
Also, if you took any photographs in the West Shore area of Llandudno yesterday, please can you let us know.
As previously described, he was last seen wearing just blue swimming shorts, with no top.”
