Florida woman body slams, kicks puppy who later dies from injuries, deputies say

A puppy that had been subjected to abuse by a Florida woman has died from its injuries.

On Wednesday, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office provided an update to a case of the small male Maltese puppy.

“It is with deep sadness that we share the dog involved in the April 30, 2026 animal cruelty case has passed away,” the sheriff’s office posted on its Facebook page. “Despite the extensive efforts of the Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center and veterinary staff, the dog could not be saved.”

Officials said cameras observed 33-year-old Imania Davis slamming the dog onto the ground twice and kicking it, according to a sheriff’s office press release.

Deputies transported the dog to a veterinarian, where it received emergency care and treatment for a broken leg, but the medical treatment could not save the dog from succumbing to its injuries.

“This is a deeply upsetting case that has impacted our entire community,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “What this innocent animal endured was cruel, violent, and unacceptable.”

Officials initially charged Davis with six counts of aggravated cruelty to animals.

They are now working with the State Attorney’s Office regarding additional charges that may apply after the dog’s death.

The case remains an active investigation.
