Sean Spicer, the former White House press secretary during the first Trump administration, is being criticized for proposing that the administration provide its own video feed while the major television networks suspend participation in the White House TV pool.
The networks took action after Trump banned CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House because he objected to their coverage. Fox News joined the other networks in suspending its participation in pooled television coverage.
Spicer wrote on social media: “In order to address the White House TV pool situation, the Whote [sic] House should utilize the White House Communications Agency and provide a live feed feed that any one [sic] can tap into.”

White House correspondent Andrew Feinberg, whose work has appeared in Politico Magazine, responded to Spicer by mocking the proposal and his typo: “The Whote House would use the Whote House Communications Agency. But as far as the White House is concerned, using WHCA wouldn’t solve the pool problem because WHCA doesn’t have access to the infrastructure the networks have built. And news organizations won’t use it anyway.”
Detroit TV journalist Jonathan Carlson also replied to Spicer, “That’s literally state television, not journalism.”
Ari Fleischer, former White House press secretary during the George W. Bush administration, opposed Trump’s media ban. He wrote: “I agree with POTUS that several media outlets covering the WH are biased and unfair. Banning them from the WH is not the solution. Open the pool and the briefing room to conservatives. Challenge liberal reporters. Argue and defeat them. Don’t ban them. Or one day they’ll ban us.”
