Wildfires ripping through southern Spain have killed at least 11 people, with British tourists feared to be among the dead.
Spain’s Almeria in Andalucia is tackling the deadly wildfires burning through the province, forcing people to flee their homes as the country faces heatwave conditions.
Victims of the fires are thought to include four British nationals.
They were found inside a burnt-out car which had its steering wheel on the right-hand side.
Antonio Sanz, Andalusia’s health and emergencies minister, said the people inside the car were believed to be ‘of British origin.’
More bodies were discovered near the village of Bédar, Almeria.
Seven of them are thought to be foreign tourists, who died after abandoning their cars and trying to escape the flames on foot through the rugged hills.
Mr Sanz said: ‘The decision to take another route instead of the designated evacuation route became a fatal trap.’
He said the victims were caught off guard by the ‘very fast-moving fire, with an extremely high rate of spread,’ El Pais reports.
A further 19 people remain missing, while over 600 people were evacuated in Los Gallardos.
The southern province has been placed under an alert due to the Los Gallardos wildfires.
The region endures a similar heatwave to the UK, with temperatures topping 30C for weeks.
Firefighting efforts have been hampered by the bone-dry conditions and winds.
