Free event honoring veterans set for Saturday on board the USS Iowa in San Pedro

A free gathering celebrating U.S. veterans will take place on the Battleship USS Iowa in San Pedro from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9.

Veterans Day — known globally as Armistice Day — is on Nov. 11 annually, which this year is on a Monday.

The Geffen Playhouse will have performances by veterans, who will present works written by other veterans.

The free event that is open to the public. It will kick off with a guest appearance by Catahoula Band Mates Pamela Clay, Bruce Bermudez and Lindsay Gillis, who will give a tribute to the U.S. Armed Forces.

Refreshments will be available for purchase, and free hot dogs and soda will be given out to veterans and current service members.

Veterans Day began as Armistice Day to mark the end of World War I and to honor the heroism of those who died in the country’s service.

In 1954, the name of the holiday was changed from “Armistice Day” to “Veterans Day” in order to recognize veterans of all wars.

Many other cities in the area will also honor veterans, either this weekend or on the holiday itself. Long Beach, for example, will combine its upcoming open streets event with a Veterans celebration on Saturday, while Redondo Beach will have a Veterans Day tribute a 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11.
