Today marks 25 years since the September 11 attacks that claimed the lives of thousands.

It has been 25 years since the horrific 9/11 attacks that brought down the Twin Towers in New York City, claiming the lives of thousands.

Close to 3,000 people died as the planes hit the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in a coordinated suicide attack on September 11, 2001.

Victims are still being identified to this day, with breakthroughs in DNA sequencing helping to uncover the identities of those who died years later.

Among those who died were the brave men and women who served as police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical responders who confronted certain death to save others.

Here, Metro pays tribute to those who died that day by listing their names.

New victims identified from DNA breakthroughs

A total of seven victims have been identified over the last few years following DNA breakthroughs.

John Ballantine Niven, Ryan Fitzgerald and Barbara Keating have been named among those who died during the attacks in recent years.

A further four people have been identified, but their names have not been released.

In 2023, the identities of two more people killed in the attack – a man and a woman – were both confirmed by New York authorities, but their families requested that their identities not be made public.

John Ballantine Niven, an executive for the insurance firm Aon Risk Services on the 105th floor of Tower Two, was identified in 2024.

Ryan Fitzgerald, who worked as a foreign currency trader in the South Tower, and Barbara Kearing, who was returning home to California after visiting family in Massachusetts, were identified as victims last year, along with a third woman whose family has asked to remain anonymous.

Most recently, an adult woman was identified as a victim, although she has not been named.
