For pretty much her whole life, Gaby Domercant has embraced new adventures.
A couple of more are on tap.
After sitting out last season following her transfer from Young, Domercant is preparing for her senior basketball season at DePaul Prep. And the season after that, she’ll be off to play college ball at Iona after recently committing to the Gaels.
‘‘I really prayed about it a lot and I really connected with the staff on my visit,’’ Domercant told the Sun-Times. ‘‘They have a lot of dexperience, so that was something I really valued. And they’ve been winning. They’ve been super-successful in the [Metro] conference already.’’
Iona was one of 17 Division I scholarship offers for Domercant, a 5-9 guard. Through the recruiting process, she had the advice of her parents, both of whom were Division I athletes. Dad Henry is now a Bulls assistant after playing at Naperville North and Eastern Illinois before a long career overseas. Mom Alexandra played volleyball at Eastern Illinois.
‘‘My dad thought I was going into the volleyball pipeline . . . but I just fell in love with basketball and he couldn’t keep me away,’’ Domercant said jokingly.
That love for the game grew when Domercant was living in Russia, Turkey and Italy during her dad’s playing days.
‘‘Basketball has taken our family all over the world,’’ she said. ‘‘I was super-grateful for all of those experiences.’’
That globetrotting has given her a perspective that’s rare for a teenager.
‘‘I remember Turkey the most because I went to grade school there,’’ Domercant said. ‘‘My best friend was Turkish. I went to an English preschool, [and] we would go on all these crazy field trips. . . . All of those kids were learning English, so we were able to communicate a little bit.’’
Now she’s ready to embark on another adventure at DePaul Prep.
The Rams went 22-7 and reached a Class 4A regional final last season, but they graduated two Division I recruits in 6-2 Grace Lee (Boston University), the program’s career scoring leader, and 6-2 Kaitlin Totaro (Loyola-Maryland).
Domercant has expanded her skills since the last time she played high school basketball as a sophomore at Young in 2024-25.
‘‘I know a lot of people know me as someone who would stand there and shoot,’’ she said. ‘‘I’m trying to expand my game to do other things and contribute in other ways.’’
DePaul coach Corey Morgan said he is eager for others to see this new version of Domercant, who isn’t going to completely change her identity.
‘‘She’s an amazing shooter, a dynamic scorer,’’ Morgan told the Sun-Times. ‘‘She immediately fit right in. She knew most of the girls from the community and the neighborhood.’’
And she’ll be a big part of whatever success the Rams have this season.
‘‘We are guard-driven and guard-loaded,’’ Morgan said. ‘‘Her shooting is going to allow us to stretch the court. We don’t have two 6-2 kids [anymore]. We’re going to try to get
after some people.’’
