Galaxy coach Greg Vanney suspended for Sporting Kansas City game

Galaxy coach Greg Vanney will serve a one-game suspension Saturday due to yellow-card accumulation.

Vanney picked up his third yellow card in Saturday’s 3-2 loss against FC Cincinnati. Assistant coach Dan Calichman will assume coaching duties Saturday against Sporting Kansas City.

“Rush of blood to the head, at the moment, I forgot I was on two (yellow cards),” Vanney said Thursday. “It happens … an opportunity for Dan to take the group. For our group, we’re far enough into this season, our preparation and the things that we’re doing, the group is … they’ll be self-sufficient through the game and Dan will be there to assist them and help where they need to.”

Calichman’s MLS career began with the inaugural Galaxy team in 1996. His coaching career began after retiring in 2001, first at Claremont-Mudd McKenna in 2002. He would later join Vanney’s staff with Toronto FC in 2014.

Vanney said this will be just the second suspension of his career as a coach.

“Not many, I try to keep it that way,” he said. “I try to maintain my composure when I can.”

Vanney will not be able to be around the club 90 minutes before the game. He will also not be able to watch the game from the sideline.

“Every day I get to work with him (Vanney) and so does Jason (Bent), who’s a wonderful assistant coach, and Nick Theslof and Kevin Hartman, we all get this opportunity and we all work well together,” Calichman said. “We know our roles. So we just kind of go. The work is done on the training pitch.”
