Girl Scouts of Saratoga help retire flags ‘with dignity’

Flag retirement ceremony

The Girl Scouts of Saratoga are hosting a flag retirement ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 5 p.m. at the flagpole in Blaney Plaza.

The scouts are inviting community members who may have flags that are ripped or worn out to bring them to the event, so they can be retired “with dignity.” For more information, contact Ramya Vasu at su618mgrteam@gmail.com.

Scientific breakthrough

Amy Pan, a student at Saratoga High School, is among 30 semifinalists in the Breakthrough Junior Challenge international science competition.

The competition tasks participants with creating an original video in the category of physics, math or life science to explain a scientific concept or principle. Pan’s video explores the connection between gut health and neurological disorders.

Winners of the competition will receive a $250,000 scholarship, $50,000 for their teacher and $100,000 for a new science lab at their school.
