The United Kingdom-based company that owns the tank posing a possible chemical explosion in Garden Grove issued a statement, along with an apology, on Sunday morning.
The threat of a blast causing widespread destruction and a toxic cloud has resulted in tens of thousands of residents of Garden Grove and neighboring cities being ordered to evacuate their homes, with no clear end in sight.
U.S. Rep. Derek Tran, whose district includes the evacuated area, called for a “deep investigation” into the situation at GKN Aerospace, a manufacturer of parts for commercial and military aircraft. Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer has created a tip line for insiders to probe what may have led to the crisis.
A half dozen law firms have said they will file lawsuits seeking class-action status for victims.
The GKN statement:
We continue to monitor the condition of the affected material and are working round the clock to mitigate the risk of a leak.
We are acutely aware of the uncertainty this incident is causing and sincerely apologise (sic) for the ongoing disruption to the local community.
We are working closely with the Orange County Fire Authority, the EPA, OSHA, and all relevant federal, state and local agencies, and remain deeply grateful for the dedication and expertise of all emergency services and agencies involved.
Our priority remains the safe resolution of this incident, so that residents can return to their homes as quickly as possible. Please continue to follow all instructions issued by local authorities and emergency personnel at this time.
