Google Cloud has added another former banking executive to its ranks as it looks to continue to grow its market share amongst financial firms that are increasingly open to using the public cloud.

Derek White has joined Google Cloud to serve as vice president of global financial services, the cloud provider announced Thursday.

White joins Google Cloud from US Bank, where he had served as chief digital officer since July 2019. Prior to that, he was global head of client solutions for Spanish financial firm BBVA. He also spent more than eight years at Barclays, holding various senior roles focused on disruptive tech and the customer experience.

At Google Cloud, White will be tasked with helping set the cloud provider’s strategy for working with financial firms. He will be based in Utah, but will be responsible for working with customers across the globe and report to Lori Mitchell-Keller, vice president of industry solutions at Google Cloud.

“Derek will set the go-to-market industry solutions strategy for our financial services industry vertical. He will work closely with Cloud AI and industry solutions engineers to develop the industry solutions roadmap and strategy, and with industry sales teams in the regions to execute that vision. He will also help lead the evolution of our cross-functional industry operating model, and oversee quality assurance of global system integrators enablement,” Mitchell-Keller told Business Insider via email.

White is the latest hire in Google Cloud’s ongoing efforts to woe Wall Street clients by employing those who worked there. In June, Yolande Piazza, a 32-year veteran at Citigroup, joined Google Cloud to serve as vice president of financial services.

Part of Piazza’s remit is defining and creating new solutions specifically for financial clients. At the time, Rob Enslin, Google Cloud president, highlighted Piazza’s experience as something the cloud provider would look to leverage.

“She has a track record in the industry of being hands on and co-creating with customers. We need someone who isn’t afraid to experiment and to push on the status quo, all while keeping our customers’ best interest at the forefront,” Enslin told Business Insider via email in June.

Google Cloud has make big stride with Wall Street

Bringing in former bank executives to make inroads with financial firms has proved to be a successful strategy. The cloud provider has had several big client wins in financial services over the past 12 months, including Deutsche Bank, CME, and PayPal.

Ulku Rowe, who spent nearly two decades working in finance at UBS, Bank of America, and JPMorgan before joining Google Cloud in 2017 as a technical director for financial services, spoke to Business Insider in July about how the tech giant caters its offering to financial firms.
