Hackers have promised to attack Elon Musk’s websites for the rest of April as tensions surrounding his government role reach a boiling point.
‘DonRoad Team’, a group which previously ‘took down’ websites belonging to and relating to President Donald Trump, wrote on Telegram that they’ve begun ‘suspending’ websites affiliated with Musk.
The group may have been behind the cyber attack on X last month, which left users unable to access the popular social media – owned by Musk.
In a post after the hack, Musk claimed: ‘We get attacked every day.
‘There was a massive cyber attack to try to bring down the X system with IP addresses originating in the Ukraine area.’
But locating the origin of cyberattacks is difficult, because the IP addresses often linked are ‘tampered with’ to make it seem that the origin is in a different country.
The Telegram announcement from the hacking group appears to have disappeared now.
But if the hacks happen, they could affect a variety of Musk’s businesses, including X and Space X.
Others include his AI platforms Grok and OpenAI, along with Tesla.
Musk isn’t the only one susceptible to hacks – last October, Chinese hackers allegedly targeted cell phones used by President Donald Trump, his Vice President JD Vance and ex-Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign.
‘The U.S. Government is investigating the unauthorized access to commercial telecommunications infrastructure by actors affiliated with the People’s Republic of China,’ the FBI and the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency said.
Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung quickly blamed Harris for allowing China to target the Republican camp and criticized the White House.
The Chinese hackers’ reported moves came just over a month after the FBI said that Iranian hackers sent information stolen from Trump’s campaign to Joe Biden’s team.
In February, the Department for Government Efficiency, which Musk leads, was hacked with their website reading ‘this is a joke of a .gov site’ and ‘THESE EXPERTS LEFT THEIR DATABASE OPEN’.
Also in February, government televisions were hacked to show an AI video of Trump kissing Elon Musk’s feet.
The bizarre video was broadcast in the office of the Department of Housing and Urban Development and widely shared by employees on social media.
This past weekend, more than 1,200 Hands Off! demonstrations were planned by more than 150 groups, including civil rights organisations, labour unions, LGBTQ+ advocates, veterans and fair elections activists.
‘Trump, Musk, and their billionaire cronies are orchestrating an all-out assault on our government, our economy, and our basic rights—enabled by Congress every step of the way,’ the organiser said.
The protests are happening at the National Mall in Washington DC, state capitols and other locations in all 50 states.
Speaking at the National Mall rally, Kelley Robinson, president of the Human Rights Campaign advocacy group, criticised the administration’s treatment of the LBGTQ+ community.
‘The attacks that we’re seeing, they’re not just political. They are personal, y’all,’ she said.
‘They’re trying to ban our books, they’re slashing HIV prevention funding, they’re criminalizing our doctors, our teachers, our families and our lives.’
‘We don’t want this America, y’all. We want the America we deserve, where dignity, safety and freedom belong not to some of us, but to all of us.’
