Historic snow storm hits US north-east as millions are put under travel ban
It could take several days for life to return back to normal after the north-eastern United States experienced an intense winter snow storm. Millions still remain under a state of emergency after the storm brought nearly two feet of snow in some places. The weather saw New York’s mayor, Zohran Mamdani, order a citywide travel ban, with the exception of emergency travel. (Picture: Noam Galai/Getty Images)
The storm spurred weather warnings from Maryland to Massachusetts, with Mamdani declaring a state of emergency on Sunday, along with the ban on all non-essential travel across streets, highways and bridges between 9pm on Sunday and noon on Monday. Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey – who engaged the state’s National Guard ahead of the storm – told residents to check on neighbours, the elderly and to “stay off the roads.”(Picture: Spencer Platt/Getty Images)
Along with a large blanket of snow, the storm brought harsh winds and cold temperatures. New York’s Central Park saw a huge 20 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Center, while Providence, Rhode Island, received 33in (83cm) of snow. This actually broke the existing record for the single greatest snowstorm in the area of 28.6in set in February of 1978, BBC reports. This type of storm is called a ‘nor’easter’, which are common storms to find on the East Coast made from strong pockets of low pressure – but it is far less common to see so much snowfall as a result. This storm also meant public schools had a full “snow day” on Monday . ‘No online school, no remote learning, full classic snow day,’ Mamdani said in a post on X. New York City residents haven’t experienced a blizzard warning like this in almost a decade and were urged to stay indoors if possible, as the historic winter storm caused tens of thousands of properties to lose power including 240,000 households in Massachusetts and 135,000 in New Jersey.(Picture: Getty Images)
Other states of emergency were declared across the region – including Connecticut, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Delaware and Rhode Island – with several states following suit with travel restrictions or bans. More than 6,000 flights in and out of US airports were cancelled through Monday, according to flight-tracking site FlightAware. (Picture: Getty Images)
Mamdani said New York would continue to expand measures it had used to deal with another major snowstorm weeks ago, with the mayor already experiencing his second major snow storms during his two months in office. Additional snow-clearing equipment from outside the city had been brought in and there were plans to expand the use of geocoding to keep track of bus stops, crosswalks, pedestrian ramps and unsheltered bus stops that need clearing. This is the second major snowstorm to hit New York City in recent weeks, after 19 people died during a three-week cold snap in January. Since late January, the city has experienced 13 days of temperatures of 0°C (32°F) or below – one of the longest stretches of sub-zero weather New York has seen in six decades.
