A reporter was left horrified thinking he accidentally stepped on the body of a girl who went missing while swimming in a river in Brazil.

Lenildo Frazão entered the water to show how deep it was while he was filming a piece about the 13-year-old’s disappearance.

The victim, named only as Raíssa, went missing while cooling off with friends in the Mearim River, in Bacabal, north-eastern Brazil.

Standing in the water up to his chest, Lenildo flinched and then leapt up as he felt something brush against him beneath the surface.

He called out to his team in Portuguese: ‘I think there’s something down here at the bottom of the water.’

He then stepped back, visibly nervous, saying: ‘No, I’m not going, I’m scared. It looks like an arm. Could it be her?

‘But it might be a fish too, I don’t know.’

After his report, firefighters and divers resumed the search for the child on June 30.

The girl’s body was found at the spot where the reporter had been filming, NeedToKnow reported.

Lenildo reported the Mearim River’s current was strong and there were ‘holes’ in the riverbed.

A post-mortem examination did not reveal any signs of violence and the cause of death was determined as accidental drowning.

Raíssa was laid to rest on the evening of June 30.
