Pilonidal cyst disease is a condition that affects upward of 70,000 Americans every year, and many more around the world. The condition generally develops near the crease of the buttocks and can lead to pain, inflammation, or infection. New Jersey pilonidal surgeon Dr. Samuil D. Identifying A Need For Specialized Care
As a board-certified surgeon with more than 15 years of experience in surgery, Dr. Rafailov identified a need for more specialized care in the region. Some patients experience recurrent disease, persistent wounds, or unsuccessful previous procedures, while others travel long distances to consult a surgeon experienced in cleft-lift surgery. As a pilonidal specialist in New Jersey, Dr. Rafailov decided to establish a practice focused on this condition.
According to Dr. Rafailov, the unmet need inspired him to build a practice focused entirely on pilonidal disease, giving patients in the broader Northeast access to cleft-lift surgery, minimally invasive options, and direct communication with their surgeon.
Founding A Practice Focused On Pilonidal Care
Today, Pilofix is a dedicated pilonidal practice serving patients in the Northeastern United States. When patients search for local pilonidal disease treatment, Pilofix is one of the specialized practices they may encounter. The practice treats patients experiencing an initial episode as well as those with complex or recurrent disease.
Pilofix’s single-disease focus allows its team to concentrate its experience on pilonidal cyst procedures and follow-up care. Its services include cleft-lift surgery, minimally invasive treatment options, liposuction-assisted contouring after treatment, and direct surgeon access. The practice says its approach emphasizes longer-term management, particularly for patients who have experienced recurrence or complications following previous treatment.
Through this approach, Pilofix has garnered more than 100 five-star reviews, according to the practice. Pilofix also reports its own cure and recurrence rates for cleft-lift surgery and salvage cases. Dr. Rafailov notes that approximately half of the patients he treats are so-called “salvage” cases referred for Bascom flap, also known as cleft lift surgery for pilonidal disease after prior attempts at treatment elsewhere. Every year, Pilofix aims to complete 100 or more cases of pilonidal disease, with the goal of helping patients manage the condition and reduce the likelihood of recurrence.
In addition to its in-person treatment options, Pilofix offers remote consultations for patients who may not be able to visit the practice initially. The practice currently serves patients across New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, and Connecticut, providing several treatment options selected according to each patient’s condition and medical history.
A Vision For The Future
Moving forward, Dr. Rafailov intends to expand Pilofix’s services while maintaining its current care model. Furthermore, he hopes to develop educational content for patients and clinicians, refine techniques such as liposuction-assisted cleftoplasty, and potentially add additional locations or affiliated surgeons who share the same focus on pilonidal disease.
Dr. Rafailov said he hopes Pilofix will become a widely recognized name in pilonidal care while maintaining a boutique practice model centered on direct surgeon-patient relationships.
