Videos of the fire have circulated on social media, with one claiming that it was “near to the railway”.

A spokesperson for Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that the fire had broken out an industrial recycling site.

They said: “We’re currently dealing with a large fire at a waste recycling site on Wallace Way, Hitchin.

“We have had to close the junction of Cadwell Lane, Wilbury Way and Woolgrove Road to set up a high-volume pump.

“Please avoid the area while we deal with this incident.”

Trains from London to Hitchin appear to only be minorly delayed at the moment.
