Human bones found washed up on a popular beach in Devon

A beach in Devon has been closed off after human bones were found in the sand.

Police have launched an investigation at Saunton Sands following the discovery on Saturday, October 11.

Officers were called to the beach at around 2.50pm.

They are still on scene today while enquiries are carried out.

An archaeologist has been called to the scene to find out how old the bones are.

Images taken at the scene by locals show a large cordon surrounding some small holes, with detectives seen studying a laptop nearby.

Devon and Cornwall Police said: ‘Officers were called at 2.50pm on Saturday 11 October following the discovery of human bones at Saunton Sands beach.

‘A scene guard remains in place while the items are recovered.

‘Police enquiries are ongoing.’

The beach is located near the village of Saunton, which is on the North Devon coast near Braunton, which is popular with locals for longboard surfing.

The discovery comes after a human bone was found inside a plastic carrier bag near Brixham harbour last week.

The investigation into the bone found at Brixham is still ongoing.
