Federal immigration authorities arrested a student at Elgin Community College Thursday morning, the college announced.
The student was arrested in a parking lot on the college’s main campus.
ECC officials said the college does not participate in immigration enforcement and does not voluntarily share information about students’ immigration status.
School officials said they could not provide any details about the student due to federal student privacy laws.
The arrest on the ECC campus was just one of many reports of immigration arrests continuing throughout the suburbs this week.
A message has been left with the media offices for ICE and DHS requesting information about who was detained and on what grounds.
Hours after the arrest, a group of educators called on ICE to stop targeting schools and colleges, urging lawmakers to uphold sanctuary protections.
“Our campus community is in shock today,” said Dan Kernler, president of the Elgin Community College Faculty Association. “College students and their families should never be separated just because they came to class. Detaining students on campus creates lasting harm and has no place in our communities.”
The Illinois Federation of Teachers and the American Federation of Teachers also condemned the arrest.
“Targeting families near schools undermines everything educators stand for and inflicts lasting trauma on children. We stand with our Illinois colleagues and immigrant communities across the country in demanding that schools remain off-limits,” said Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, in a statement.
