Inland sweep apprehends 2 murder suspects in 2021 shooting in San Bernardino

Police served nine search warrants early Thursday related to a fatal gang-related shooting in San Bernardino in 2021, arresting two suspects in the case and apprehending several others suspected of crimes.

The warrants were executed in San Bernardino, Highland, Riverside, Pomona and Hesperia.

San Bernardino Police Capt. Nelson Carrington did not specify the exact motive for the attack that took the life of 21-year-old Alexander Roy Chagolla in the 2100 block of North Lugo Avenue. Detectives were investigating a shooting about 1 a.m. on Dec. 21, 2021, when they learned that friends took Chagolla to a hospital after he was shot.

But Carrington called it a gang-related shooting. One suspect, 27-year-old Raymond Garcia of Highland, is a documented gang member, and the other, 24-year-old Jose Cruz of Hesperia, is affiliated with a gang, the captain said.

Garcia is in custody in New Mexico, Carrington said.

Many of the warrants were served simultaneously between 5:30 a.m. and 6 a.m., Carrington said. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and other agencies participated in the sweep.

The investigation turned up crimes that were associated with the murder suspects, including attempted murder, conspiracy to commit robbery, pimping and pandering and firearms violations, Carrington said.

“We never close homicide cases until the suspect has been identified,” Police Chief Darren Goodman said in a written statement. “It doesn’t matter if the crime occurred yesterday, last week, or 15 years ago, we will continue to work every lead until those responsible have been identified and taken into custody.”

Police ask anyone with information on the case to contact Detective Nathaniel Guzman at Guzman_Na@sbcity.org.
