Inmate, 56, dies at Main Jail in San Jose

SAN JOSE – An inmate died over the weekend at the Main Jail in San Jose, according to authorities.

Deputies found the inmate unresponsive in his cell at 5:07 p.m. Saturday, the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. Medical personnel arrived at the jail at 5:20 p.m. and pronounced the inmate dead about 25 minutes later.

An investigation is underway, but early findings suggest no signs of foul play, according to authorities.

The inmate, identified Monday only as 56-year-old man, was booked Friday on several outstanding warrants, including being a felon in possession of a firearm, driving under the influence and possessing drug paraphernalia, the sheriff’s office said.

Per standard procedure, the sheriff’s office is investigating the case with the district attorney’s and medical examiner-coroner’s offices, according to authorities.

The in-custody death is the second of the year in the county. Last year, 10 inmates died.
