Killer told police ‘it’s happened again’ after handing himself in for fatally stabbing friend

A convicted killer told police that it had ‘happened again’ after he handed himself in for killing a friend on New Year’s Eve.

Daniel Levy, 48, stabbed Abdul Kaleem Shaik, 41, in the neck at his home in Vauxhall before walking into Bishopsgate Police Station on January 1.

Officers later found Shaik’s body on a makeshift bed inside the flat, before Levy admitted to murdering Shaik at the Old Bailey after initially denying the charge.

He told police he had known Shaik for years and had allowed him to stay at his flat.

During a police interview, Levy claimed Shaik had been struggling with his mental health and that he believed killing him would help secure his passage to heaven.

Prosecutor Peter Ratliff said Levy had told police he had been thinking about killing Shaik for some time.

‘He said he could hear him dying but did not want to watch it and went to the mosque to pray, had a massage and showered before going to the police station,’ he told an earlier hearing.

Levy, who has schizophrenia, has a previous conviction for killing his grandmother.

In 2000, he stabbed and then set fire to his grandmother, before being convicted of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

He was given an indefinite hospital order and was later released from a secure mental health unit.

Levy was recalled to hospital in 2013 after experiencing thoughts of killing his parents.

Following his release, he was required to remain in contact with mental health services and receive medication by supervised injection.

He initially denied murdering Shaik, citing his mental health, but changed his plea shortly before his trial was due to begin.

Speaking to judge Lynn Tayton KC, Levy said: ‘I don’t want to go to trial. I don’t want my personal information outside in public. I would rather just go quietly as possible, do my time.’

The judge ruled that Levy was fit to enter his guilty plea. He was remanded in custody and is due to be sentenced at the Old Bailey on September 9.
