The Los Angeles Valley College Veterans Resource Center hosted a Veterans Day Celebration to honor veterans at the community college on Monday in Valley Glen.
The LAVC Police Orientation Preparation Program’s Color Guard performed a flag presentation and Desiree Lee-Perry, assistant professor, LAVC Business Administration, sang the National Anthem in the outdoor Student Services Center Plaza.
Student speakers were Douglas Washington, vice president, LAVC Academic Warriors, and Monique Rocha, president, LAVC Academic Warriors.
The event included information on veterans resources, music and free food for the attendees.
The Veterans Resource Center currently services 307 veterans and military-connected dependents.
Los Angeles Valley College has assisted veterans and their dependents eligible through GI Bill benefits for decades, said Jennifer Fong Borucki, manager of public relations at LAVC. However, she said, in its current form, VRC offers more robust support for students who are veterans.
The Veterans Resource Center was established in 2012 to be a one-stop location with dedicated staff and counseling faculty to assist veterans and their dependents who are eligible for VA educational benefits.
