Letter: If Texas is going to gerrymander, California should too

I campaigned for and support nonpartisan redistricting committees, such as we have in California. Generally speaking, as long as politicians control district maps, some individuals will be disadvantaged through the deliberate use of unfair gerrymandering.

However, we are at a critical point in our history where one party, the Republicans, has decided to become an authoritarian party. They have taken a jackhammer to our government and are shredding our individual rights. These are not just “party policies,” they aim to destroy our Constitutional representative democracy to ensure they retain power.

Republicans in Texas are overtly and unfairly redrawing their districts to win the election in 2026 and 2028. Other red states are considering doing the same. California cannot sit back and do nothing. We cannot be pacifists.  Sometimes you must fight for what is right.

Governor Newsom has promised that redrawn districts in California would be conditional on Texas and other states proceeding with unfair gerrymandering. Under those caveats, I support fighting fire with fire.
