The lone fatality in a burst of overnight weekend violence from Saturday night through early Sunday has been identified.
Stephon Jacobs, 16, was gunned down in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood.
He was found lying in a hallway of a home in the 7700 block of South Rhodes Avenue around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. He had been shot in the chest.
Jacobs was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said. His death was ruled a homicide by the medical examiner’s office. Police initially had said Jacobs was 18 years old.
Multiple people were in two upstairs bedrooms of the Grand Crossing home when shots were heard and the individuals fled in an unknown direction, according to a police report obtained by the Sun-Times.
A single cartridge casing was found near Jacob’s body, the police report stated.
Area 2 detectives continue to investigate.
Stephon was one of several teens shot from around 9:30 p.m. Saturday to just after 5 a.m. Sunday.
Earlier Saturday night, four boys — an 11-year-old, two 13-year-olds, and a 14-year-old —were shot in the Grand Boulevard neighborhood. They were in the 4500 block of South Prairie Avenue when someone opened fire on them at around 9:30 p.m., according to police.
A 13-year-old boy was cited in a juvenile petition with a gun charge in connection with the shooting, police said.
