Macklin Celebrini practices again as Sharks roll out new power play units

SAN JOSE – San Jose Sharks center Macklin Celebrini practiced with his teammates again on Tuesday after he missed time during training camp last week with what was described as an illness.

Celebrini took part in power play drills early in practice, as he formed a unit with fellow forwards Will Smith, Tyler Toffoli, William Eklund and defenseman Sam Dickinson. Another power play unit featured forwards Philipp Kurashev, Alexander Wennberg, Jeff Skinner, Michael Misa and defenseman Dmitry Orlov.

Celebrini also centered a line with Smith and Skinner on the wings, just like he did at the start of camp. But he stayed out of the team’s battle drills along the boards at both end of the ice, working on his faceoff technique with Sharks guest assistant coach Zenon Konopka, who had a career 59.6 faceoff percentage in 346 career NHL games.

Celebrini skated with the Sharks on Thursday but was sent home by the team after he reported not feeling well. He then stayed off the ice on Friday and Saturday before he skated again on Sunday, doing skill work with development coach Mike Ricci.

Last season, Celebrini, 19, finished second among all rookies with 25 goals and 38 assists as he led the Sharks with 63 points.

The Sharks reduced their training camp roster by seven players on Monday and are now practicing with two groups. The first group that practiced Tuesday featured mainly players who are expected to be on the team’s 23-man roster for the start of the regular season.

Defenseman John Klingberg was listed a being a part of the first group but was not on the ice for the practice session. It was not immediately clear why. Klingberg played over 21 minutes and scored a goal in the Sharks’ 3-0 win over the Vegas Golden Knights on Sunday in the preseason opener for both teams.

Klingberg had double hip resurfacing surgery in Dec. 2023 and signed with the Edmonton Oilers in January and was part of the team’s run to the Stanley Cup Final in the spring.

Klingberg said last week that, “there’s no pain in the joint anymore, which is really nice, but (it’s) still a work in progress. It’s just going to be week by week here. But it’s better than it’s been in the past, but it’s just getting used to the new normal.”

San Jose’s next preseason game is on Friday at home against the Golden Knights.
