A man who ‘wouldn’t hurt a fly’ has died after he was attacked at his Clapham flat, prompting a murder enquiry.
Police have launched a manhunt after Thomas Carey, 39, was found unresponsive with fatal head injuries.
Neighbours said they saw police, firefighters and paramedics swoop on the first-floor apartment on Poynders Road on Saturday.
Forensics experts are now scouring the apartment, half a mile from Clapham Common, for evidence.
Meanwhile, detectives are carrying out door-to-door inquiries and collecting CCTV and Ring Doorbell footage. No arrests have been made.
A neighbour of the victim told Metro: ‘When the paramedics came, I thought it was a medical episode.
‘When I found out it was a murder, it was a massive shock. He was a nice, respectful guy who wouldn’t hurt a fly. He would always say hello and was very respectful.’
Another neighbour said: ‘The bloke was no threat to anyone. I don’t know why anyone would have wanted to hurt him. He was friendly enough, spoke well and just seemed a decent guy.
‘The guy lived alone and we are all gutted that this has happened. It’s heartbreaking.’
Specialist police officers are supporting Thomas’ next of kin as the investigation continues.
Detective Chief Inspector Alison Foxwell, who is leading the inquiry, said: ‘This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones as they come to terms with their loss.
‘We are working hard to establish exactly what happened and a team of detectives is progressing a number of enquiries at pace.
‘At this stage, we believe this was an isolated incident, and there is no evidence to suggest any wider risk to the public.
‘I would urge anyone who was in the area, or who may have seen or heard anything unusual, to come forward and speak to us. Even the smallest piece of information could prove vital in helping us understand the circumstances surrounding this man’s death.
‘We understand this news will cause concern within the local community and residents can expect to see an increased police presence in the area as our investigation continues.’
