Man charged in girlfriend’s Oakland beating death

OAKLAND — A man was charged with murder Monday in the suspected beating death of his girlfriend Friday morning at the residence they shared, according to authorities and court records.

Marion Chesher, 50, is accused of killing 63-year-old Meili Liu.

He was being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail pending his arraignment Tuesday.

Liu was found badly beaten inside the residence the two shared in the 2900 block of Schyler Street near the Dimond district about 9 a.m. Friday morning. Authorities said the home belongs to Chesher’s family.

She was found after Chesher called the fire department and not police, authorities said. Police were contacted by the fire department. Liu was taken to a hospital where she later died.

Chesher was arrested at the residence.

A motive for the attack has not yet been determined, police said. Police have not been able to confirm if Liu was beaten by a blunt object or fists or both.

Police said they were told the two had been in a relationship for some 10 years.
