A man has taken home more than a £1.5million after purchasing not one, but two identical winning lottery tickets.

Paul Corcoran unwittingly doubled his winnings after entering the July 9 Powerball twice, believing his first ticket was invalid.

He had bought a ticket for seven draws, but, believing that the final draw had already occurred, bought another one.

His lucky numbers were 5, 9, 25, 28, 69 and red powerball 5.

Corcoran, of Fitchburg, Massachussetts, ended up with two tickets each worth $1million.

He added that his win ‘felt good’ but had no plans on how he would like to spend the money.

The powerball draw on Wednesday July 9 contained five tickets each worth $1million before tax.

Corcoran claimed his winnings on July 11 at the Massachusetts State Lottery’s Dorchester headquarters.

He purchased his original ticket at a supermarket in Fitchburg and the second at a petrol station in Leominster, ABC News reported.

Both stores will receive a $10,000 bonus for selling the winning tickets.

The powerball jackpot is playable across 45 US states, with tickets costing $2 per person.

Each ticket has a one in 24 chance of winning a prize, although the odds of taking home the jackpot are a staggering one in 292.2 million.
