Man seriously injured by Brighton police during arrest on suspicion of domestic violence

A 33-year-old man was seriously injured by a Brighton Police Department officer while he was being arrested on suspicion of assault and domestic violence.

Bystanders called 911 on Monday morning about a man and a woman arguing at Brighton Japanese American Association Park, 1220 Longs Peak St., city officials said in a news release Tuesday.

Callers later reported the man was assaulting the woman. Police officers arrived at BJAA Park and issued commands, but the man “remained uncooperative,” resisted arrest and was seriously injured in the process.

The man was taken to the hospital. Brighton city leaders did not provide further details about the nature of the man’s injuries or his condition.

The officer involved in the arrest is on paid administrative leave, and the 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the incident.
