Man shot by Greeley police officer had gun in front seat, officials say

Investigators found a gun in the vehicle a man was in when he was shot by a Greeley police officer following a traffic stop last week.

The gun was on the driver’s seat near the center console of the vehicle in which 18-year-old Aden Jeannoutot was sitting in the passenger seat, according to a Tuesday update by the Weld County Sheriff’s Office.

The shooting happened at 3:50 p.m., Nov. 26, when the officer pulled over a vehicle near 16th Street and 21st Avenue, the initial release by the 19th Judicial District states.

The woman driving the vehicle got out, but Jeannoutot, who was wanted on an Idaho warrant for lewd acts with a minor, stayed in the passenger seat.

An officer told him to get out of the vehicle, but he instead leaned over the center console area while reaching into a satchel-type bag across his chest, according to the update. The officer shot Jeannoutot after he ignored additional commands, officials said the night of the shooting.

The shooting is still under investigation by the Weld County Critical Incident Response Team, which investigates incidents in which an officer uses or attempts to use deadly force while on duty, using members of various Weld County law enforcement agencies. The district attorney then reviews the team’s findings to determine whether to clear the officer of charges or refer the shooting to a grand jury.
