Man shot by police charged after fight with neighbor sparked shootout with cops in Morgan Park

A 35-year-old Chicago man is accused of allegedly shooting a Chicago police officer sparking another officer to open fire, hitting the 35-year-old and the 18-year-old neighbor he was fighting with early Sunday Morgan Park on the South Side.

Darren Brewster, 35, was charged with attempted murder, home invasion with a firearm, aggravated discharge of a firearm and aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon, police said.

A 15-year-old boy was also charged with home invasion at the same location, police said.

Police were called to the 11400 block of South Davol Avenue around 1 a.m. Sunday, where they found Brewster and his 18-year-old neighbor arguing, police said.

Officers attempted to separate the two when Brewster’s gun allegedly went off, striking the 18-year-old and the officer in his vest, officials said. A second officer returned shots, hitting Brewster and the 18-year-old.

Brewster was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center where he was in fair condition and the 18-year-old — who was shot twice — was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, also in fair condition.

The protective vest the officer was wearing at the time saved his life, police said.

Brewster was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
