Man shot, killed by Colorado Springs police Monday

A man was shot and killed by police early Monday morning in southeast Colorado Springs, according to the police department.

Colorado Springs police officers responded to reports of shots fired in the 1400 block of Mechelle Court just after 1 a.m. Monday, according to a statement from the agency.

That block, east of South Academy Boulevard and East Fountain Boulevard, is home to the Antero Apartments.

When officers arrived, they found a man with a gun, police said.

Officers ordered the man to drop the gun, but he allegedly pointed it at them and fired at least one shot, according to the police department.

Two unidentified officers shot back, hitting the man. The man, who has not been publicly identified, died from his injuries before paramedics could take him to the hospital.

He will be identified by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office.

Police said no officers were injured in the shooting.

The Colorado Springs Police Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment Monday morning.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office will lead the investigation into the police shooting.
