A man in his early 20s has been stabbed in the neck at Spain’s Palma de Mallorca Airport ‘for no reason’.
Chaos engulfed the busy airport, visited by 2.3 million British tourists each year, when the incident happened earlier today.
The victim had been waiting in the arrivals area to pick up a friend who was flying into the island.
It was then that he was approached by an unknown man, who ran up to him and started to ask about his mobile phone.
Taking advantage of the proximity, the attacker then pulled out a knife and plunged it into his neck.
Spain’s media outlet Ultima Hora reported: ‘Those present were paralyzed by the incident and shocked by the sudden attack.’
An alarm was raised and the perpetrator was arrested shortly after, while still inside the airport.
Police are still investigating the possible motives of the stabbing, but local media reported that it happened ‘for no reason’ and that the two men did not know each other.
The injured man was treated on-site by paramedics, who stabilized him at the scene.
He was later transferred to a hospital, but no further details have been circulated yet about his condition.
Airports across Spain are operating at a heightened alert after a teenager was shot dead by police at Gran Canaria Airport.
Abdoulie Bah, 18, is alleged to have threatened members of the public with a ‘large’ knife after attacking and attempting to rob a taxi driver.
Footage has since emerged showing the young man running at one of five Spanish National Police officers trying to stop him as members of the public sprint for cover.
It is then thought he tried to attack the officer’s colleagues who appeared to be warning him. Shortly after shots were fired and he was killed.
