A hiker reported missing after he failed to return home on time was found dead near Boulder’s Third Flatiron on Wednesday, sheriff’s officials said. This is the second death in the Flatirons this week.
The hiker, an unidentified 27-year-old man, went “scrambling” near the Third Flatiron on Tuesday, Boulder sheriff’s officials said in a news release. His sister reported him missing on Wednesday after he didn’t come home overnight.
Rock scrambling is a middle ground between hiking and rock climbing where people navigate boulders and rocky terrain using both hands and feet.
Boulder sheriff’s officials found the man’s car parked near the Gregory Canyon trailhead Wednesday morning and called in the Boulder Emergency Squad, a volunteer search and rescue team, according to the news release.
Sheriff’s officials said the Boulder search team found the man’s body around 12:10 p.m. Wednesday in a “remote area” near the Third Flatiron.
A second volunteer team, the Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, made the difficult climb up to the body and brought the man back down to the waiting coroner, sheriff’s officials said. The recovery took nearly nine hours.
The Boulder County coroner will identify the man at a later date.
