MLB vs. college basketball: Which is the best sports thing going in March?

March is here, and you know what that means.

It’s college basketball’s month. Not to mention baseball’s month.

But whose month is it, really?

In this week’s “Polling Place,” your home for Sun-Times sports polls on the social platform X, we wanted to know if March Madness beats “Play ball!” or vice-versa.

“I vote MLB Opening Day,” @TheRealChadRyan commented. “Baseball every day for the foreseeable future!”

“There’s no better weekend than the opening rounds of the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments,” was @viceprez79’s take.

Next, we asked if Sammy Sosa hanging around Cubs spring training as a guest instructor is a good thing.

Cracked @usualsuspectpnc, “As far as ideas go, it’s a corker.”

And @ronw_sportsnut asked, “Is he going to instruct on taking PEDs or Flintstone vitamins?”

Last — in the wake of actor Gene Hackman’s death — we listed four basketball movies and asked which was best. Hackman’s “Hoosiers” dunked on the rest, though @readjack went in hard for “Blue Chips,” calling it “not just the best hoops movie ever [but] the best sports movie ever.”

On to the polls:

Poll No. 1: What’s the best thing about sports in March, in two words?

It’s time for this week’s “Polling Place.” Let us hear from you! Selected comments will appear in Sunday’s paper.

Upshot: Nothing beats Opening Day. Except, that is, for the Big Dance, which pretty much beats anything else, every time. Put a hashtag and “facts” on that statement and call it a day.

Poll No. 2: Sammy Sosa is at Cubs spring training as a guest instructor. How do you feel about that?

Upshot: In case anyone was wondering about the “Flintstones” reference, yes, Sosa once claimed they were the secret to his caveman power. He was telling the truth, too. Just ask him.

Upshot: The annoying thing about editorial license is it enables certain know-it-alls to point out that a vote like this one is ridiculously off the mark because “Blue Chips” was, in fact, great and “White Man Can’t Jump” was, in fact, even better and the best of the lot. Not that yours truly would doubt your opinions or anything.
