Independent MP Ayoub Khan has revealed he was once forced to kill a dog to save a baby’s life.

The Independent Alliance member, a party formed by other solo MPs, including former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, said he restrained a dog to protect a baby.

Khan added he was forced to take action or else put the baby at risk of being mauled by the animal.

‘It was either a baby being mauled or restraining the dog. Unfortunately, during the process, the dog lost its life,’ he told Politics Home.

‘But it was either a baby or a dog, and nobody was intending to kill anyone, but just trying to protect the baby.’

He added: ‘I didn’t intend to kill anybody. But yeah… The dog died as a result of me trying to protect the baby.’

Khan revealed his story at the inaugural conference for the new left-wing political group Your Party in Liverpool, which has already fallen into chaos after co-founder Zarah Sultana announced she was boycotting it.

The independent MP for Birmingham Perry Barr helped to form the Independent Alliance and has since been part of the founding process for Your Party, formed by Corbyn and Sultana.

Sultana was the first person to trumpet the arrival of Your Party in July, with a post on X widely believed to have caught Corbyn off guard.

But the creation of the new outfit – which is yet to gain an official name – was overshadowed by a series of public spats between the top figures.

Now, they have culminated in an ugly dispute on day one of the conference at the ACC in Liverpool over the blocking of members from a different socialist movement.

Speaking on the dispute, Khan said: ‘I understand the reasoning behind that is, if you’re affiliated to another political party, unless you revoke that membership and join another membership, it is one that makes common sense to me.’

In the days ahead of the conference, two members of the parliamentary group – Iqbal Mohamed and Adnan Hussain – stepped away from Your Party.

Khan said he had a ‘fabulous relationship’ with the members and hopes for their return to the party.

‘We’ve been working for the best part of over 16 months,’ he said.

‘We have a fabulous relationship, a very strong relationship. I’d like to see them come back and never say never, is my view. But I respect the fact that they made that decision.’

Your Party remains a temporary name for the political group, but party members will debate an amendment on the official name this weekend.

The four options under consideration are: Your Party, Our Party, For the Many and Popular Alliance.
