A number of people are dead and four have been taken to hospital after a car drove the wrong way along a motorway in Ireland.

Among the passengers injured in the crash in Co Kildare early this morning was a child, who remains in a serious condition.

Gardaí, the Irish police force, said the ‘head-on collision’ took place on the northbound stretch of the M9 road at around 3am.

The female driver and front passenger in the second car, both in their 30s, remain in a critical condition at Tallaght University Hospital.

Another woman in her 20s, who was a passenger in the rear seat, is also in a serious condition at St Luke’s General Hospital.
