‘Musk salute shows just how far we have come – it isn’t normal politics’

Has fascism become so normalised we’re desensitised to it?

Given the vast amount of power and influence Elon Musk holds, the fact we’re even debating whether he performed a Nazi salute at Donald Trump’s inauguration is outrageous (Metro, Wed).

Fascism has become more and more normalised over the past ten years, through both words and actions, so that what was once unthinkable is now virtually mainstream.

Already too many leaders are refusing to tell the truth – that Trump and Musk are fascists leading a fascist government.

We must remember that the things they do and the beliefs they represent are extreme, poisonous and ridiculous.

We cannot and must not let it feel normal. If we let ourselves be desensitised to fascism, then it will take hold in our politics – and we know how that ends.

Imagine how this would’ve been seen ten years ago. This is unacceptable behaviour. None of this is normal. None of this is OK. Ryan Cooper, London

Would Trump’s change to constitutional citizenship rights apply to himself?

Y’know, he’d probably pardon himself… (Picture: Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images)

‘He’s the son of Scottish and German immigrants’
Trump wants to end the constitutional right of US citizenship to those children born in the country of immigrants, specifically those in the country illegally or on temporary visas.

As the son of a Scottish immigrant and grandson of a German immigrant, will he lose his US citizenship and become ineligible to be president? Or just pardon himself? Frank, London

Promises, promises

‘The Donald will do it.’
UK politicians promised to stop illegal immigrants and send them back. It never happened. On his first day in office, Trump declared ‘a national emergency’ at the border with Mexico and that he would send troops there ‘to repel the disastrous invasion of our country’.

The Donald will increase the US production of oil and gas, saying ‘drill, baby, drill’ and drive prices down. UK politicians are closing down UK oil and gas assets.

The Donald will withdraw from the Paris climate deal and revoke the electric vehicle mandate, thus saving the US
auto industry.

UK politicians blindly follow the mega-expensive climate bible as industry haemorrhages workers.

UK politicians only promise to cut the numbers employed in the public sector but The Donald will do it. Clark Cross, Linlithgow

Trump’s takeover

‘What sort of message does this give to the dictators of the world’
Trump would like to buy Greenland, make Canada the 51st US state, take over the Panama Canal and rename the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf of America.

What sort of message does this give to the dictators of the world, who wish to expand their countries’ territorial ambitions?

Is it a green light for despots to do exactly what they like, at whatever the human cost?

The country’s democracy is now under threat. Perhaps the US will very soon become a totalitarian state. Alan Jensen, West Hampstead

Is this the American Nightmare?

It seems the American Dream consists of hating our planet, driving big gas-guzzling cars on cheap fuel and getting fat on fast food! What a dream. It’s no wonder most Americans love Trump. Green Dave, Manchester
