Nancy Mace Slammed for “Seniors Should Not Pay Property Taxes” Comment

Rep. Nancy Mace

U.S. Representative Nancy Mace (R-SC), who is running for Governor of South Carolina, announced Tuesday on social media, “Our seniors should not pay property taxes.”

Her comment ignited passionate responses, including one from housing and economic analyst Amy Nixon, who replied: “If you’re going to eliminate property taxes, you have to eliminate them across the board, not pick and choose select age groups to benefit while others carry the increased burden.”

MAGA candidate Keith Gross, who’s running for Congress in Florida, replied to Mace: “Why not every property owner? If private property ownership is a fundamental right, why should a fee attach to that right for anyone? No one should lose their home because they fail to pay the government an annual fee merely because they still own it. Age shouldn’t matter.”

Russ Greene, executive director of Prime Mover Institute, also replied to Mace: “Yes, they should,” and provided data that showed the average net worth of those 55+ is more than double the net worth of those in their mid-30s.

Dan Gainor, a senior opinion editor at Fox News, replied to Greene: “Senior here, I agree with you.”

Marty Rosa, who describes himself as “a finance guy, retired and living on dividend income,” also replied to Greene: “Yes, we should. Seniors who don’t want to pay property taxes are selfish. There, I said it.”

Others are criticizing Greene for using “average” numbers vs. “median” numbers to make his point.

[NOTE: The data Greene shared was provided by the Federal Reserve Survey of Consumer Finances, which also provided the median numbers, see below.]
