New LA Chargers mural in Torrance is underway

World-renowned artist Robert Vargas began working on his second mural in Torrance on Tuesday, Aug. 18, furiously painting throughout most of the sunlight hours, aiming to complete the more than 100-foot-tall mural featuring Los Angeles Chargers player Robert Vargas before the NFL season begins in September.

The mural, titled “The Storm is Coming,” is being painted on the north side of the DoubleTree by Hilton Torrance Hotel, opposite his first mural, “Samurai of the Diamond,” which features Los Angeles Dodgers players. Vargas said that he has chosen sports themes for these two Torrance murals because of how communities with different backgrounds, cultures and views can unite in support of their local teams.

“Sports have a unique power to bridge cultures, unite communities and bring people from all different backgrounds together,” Vargas said in a written statement. “With ‘The Storm is Coming,’ I want to capture that electric energy and local pride, celebrating the Chargers and giving the South Bay a new visual anchor that inspires everyone who sees it.”

Vargas can be seen throughout the coming weeks suspended many stories above the ground, painting the mural completely freehand, using no grids or projections. He encourages the community to visit the north side of the hotel and track his progress before the mural is completed and unveiled on Sept. 8.
