Big spoilers for Shazam! wrath of the gods lie ahead, so read at your own risk.
Shazam! wrath of the gods is finally here, bringing fans the exciting next chapter in the story of Billy Batson and his foster family, who also serve as his superhero cohorts. While the sequel’s main story is relatively self-contained, it also contains some references to the broader DC Extended Universe, or DCEU – which is now morphing into the DCU. As a result, fans were treated to a big DC cameo (which was sadly spoiled in an ad). It’s a cool moment, but as Mary Bromfield actress Grace Caroline Curry revealed, the cast didn’t really get along with the actor.
In the film’s third act, Billy Batson battles the villain Calypso, who commanded the dragon Landon and ravaged Philadelphia after planting the mighty Tree of Life. Unsure how to defeat the villain, Billy realizes that the dome (where Hespera encased the city) does not respond well to his flash. With that, the dying Hespera shrinks, trapping both Batson and her insane sister inside. In the dome, Billy overloads the wizard’s staff with its electrical charges and manages to defeat Calypso. Although he sacrifices himself in the process, he is later resurrected in the realm of the gods after Diana Prince aka Wonder Woman from Gal Gadot appears and recharges the staff.
The scene where Prince also restores the kingdom of the gods was certainly exciting for fans, and Grace Caroline Curry (who was also promoted to the role of superhero Mary) was also hyped about it. However, the star explained to CinemaBlend that there were a lot of logistics preventing the stars from actually filming with Gal Gadot. When asked if she filmed with Gadot, Curry said frankly:
Well I haven’t [laughs], which was a huge thing… I also think scheduling and projects and I want to say it was like in another country or something. As if we were literal… when you try to get someone on the green screen, you still don’t know if you can get them. So the funny thing was we were like, ‘Are we going to get Gal? Are we going to have that Wonder Woman moment?’ And we were shooting just in case, anyway, and knowing that maybe it’s just for the gag, you know? Maybe it’s just the gag of ‘No Head Wonder Woman’.
The story goes on
The actress seems to relate to that much-discussed headless Superman moment that happened in the closing moments of the original 2019 film. Some were disappointed when the camera didn’t pan up to show Henry Cavill as the person wearing the red and blue costume. So those who have seen wrath of the gods will be thrilled that Gal Gadot actually showed up for this cinematic outing. It’s just a bit ironic that while fans’ desire for a full DCU cameo has been granted, the stars themselves haven’t really gotten in on the fun from a BTS perspective. Nevertheless, Grace Caroline Curry sees a ray of hope in the situation:
So I still haven’t met her. [laughs] [But] the suit, as nerdy as it sounds to have the suit on set – her suit… Just having the suit on set was pretty cool.
This latest appearance of Wonder Woman is likely to be even more special for fans, as the character’s cinematic future is up in the air. The same goes for Billy Batson and his found family. However, DC Studios co-heads James Gunn has debunked rumours of the death of Diana Prince, during Shazam! Director David F. Sandberg has reached out to fans about the future of the franchise. With any luck, fans will see more of these characters in some way in the future. But if not, I’m glad we at least have a scene where Billy and (his crush) Diana meet in a cute (and funny) way.
