A former Concordia University champion swimmer was charged with second-degree murder last week for allegedly beating a security guard in Maui to death with a 5-gallon water bottle while nude, authorities said.
Legend Storer, who is listed on the private Irvine university’s final men’s swim team in the 2024-25 school year, has pleaded not guilty to the charges, which also include first-degree burglary and indecent exposure, court records show.
Concordia University officials on Monday confirmed that Storer attended the school and was the same person charged with the crimes in Hawaii.
Storer is accused of illegally entering the office of a condominium complex in Kahana, on the western side of Maui, around 1:45 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, and killing 63-year-old Michael Dyer, according to the Maui Police Department and a criminal complaint filed by the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
A coworker of Dyer’s told a local media outlet, Hawaii News Now, that he was inside the office eating a cheeseburger on a lunch break when the attack occurred. Dyer was married and had no children.
Dyer’s family, in a statement to the outlet, said “Mike was a family man and very devoted to his wife, Joy. Our family is in the process of setting up a GoFundMe to help with this sudden and tragic event.”
When reached Sunday, Storer’s attorney declined to comment. His mother hung up on a reporter and his father did not respond to a message seeking comment.
The attack was caught on surveillance video, police said. More than an hour after the attack, at just past 3 a.m., police received a report of a nude man wandering through a Kahana neighborhood. Officers said they found Storer a half hour later with numerous abrasions. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
Police then received calls around 5:35 a.m. of an unresponsive man and found Dyer dead at the complex, police said.
After viewing the surveillance video, detectives said they learned the man who was taken to the hospital was the same person who attacked Dyer. The man, who was only identified as being 20-years old by police, was arrested.
A criminal complaint filed by the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office in Maui identified Storer as the man who allegedly killed Dyer. A motive and any other details regarding the attack were not available.
In Hawaii, suspect identities and dates of birth are not released by police due to a court of appeals ruling “recognizing that such information can remain publicly accessible online indefinitely, even if charges are later dropped or an individual is found not guilty,” a note from the police news release states.
“After Concordia discontinued the Men’s Swim program in May 2025, Legend did not return as a student,” Ann Ashmon, associate vice president of strategic communications, verified on Monday.
Before Concordia, Storer attended Maui Preparatory Academy and was a member of the Lahaina Swim Club.
At Maui Preparatory Academy, he was a two-time Maui Interscholastic League champion, according to his profile on Concordia University’s website.
Storer is being held in jail in Maui on no bail.
Due to Dyer’s age – the complaint references Storer as “an offender against the elderly” – Storer may face a harsher sentence if convicted. The Prosecuting Attorney’s Office refers to elderly as “a person who has the status of being sixty years of age or older at the time of the crime.”
