OAKLAND — Police here recently visited the hospital bed of a shooting victim, not to question him about the crime, but to place him under arrest for allegedly robbing a bong shop months earlier.
The 20-year-old Albany native was arrested after being shot by an unknown assailant on Oct. 12. When police in Berkeley learned of the shooting, they came to arrest him on a pending robbery warrant, court records show.
The 20-year-old man is suspected of joining a cohort in an armed robbery of a bong shop on the 1900 block of Ashby Avenue in Berkeley. Police say the pair got away with $500 in cash and nearly $3,000 worth of bongs.
Officers took a DNA sample in order to test it against a piece of tape found at the robbery scene, authorities said. Thus far, the man hasn’t been charged in connection with the robbery.
Back in May, the 20-year-old man was arrested and charged with possession of an unserialized gun within a block of Berkeley High School. He later took a plea deal for a misdemeanor conviction and was sentenced to six days in jail and probation, records show.
