An off-duty Chicago police detective was found dead Friday afternoon inside his Mount Greenwood home, according to police and sources.
The 59-year-old was found unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head about noon inside a home in the 3900 block of West 104th Street, Chicago police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office has not released his name. An autopsy hasn’t been completed.
“I ask that you keep his family, loved ones and all those who worked alongside him in your thoughts as they process his unfathomable loss,” Police Supt. Larry Snelling wrote in a message to department members.
Snelling noted the detective had been assigned to the Area 2 Division, which covers most of the South Side.
“Grief can weigh heavy on us as we try to understand the loss of a fellow CPD member,” Snelling wrote in his message, while reminding members of the department’s Employee Assistance Program and its Chaplains Ministry.
