The Oktoberfest beer festival has been forced to close for the day following a bomb threat linked to an explosion in Munich.

A man had been found dead after reportedly setting fire to his parents’ home and booby-trapping it with explosives, Bild reports.

There were reports of gunfire at around 4.40am this morning before several loud bangs were heard in the local area.

Officers have searched the Oktoberfest grounds for other explosives and have asked workers to leave the area.

Police said in a statement on X: ‘Special forces were called in for defusing. We are on site with numerous emergency response personnel.

‘According to the current state of knowledge, the residential building was deliberately set on fire in the context of a family dispute.

‘The injured person found has since passed away. Another person is missing, from whom no danger is posed.’

Oktoberfest is the world’s largest beer festival and attracts up to 6 million visitors.

This year’s festivities began on September 20 and ends October 5.
