OAKLEY – A boy driving a stolen car at “excessive speeds” hit and killed another motorist Tuesday morning in Oakley while trying to flee from officers, police said.
Initially chased by Antioch officers, the car roared into Oakley at speeds of 80 mph around 10:25 a.m. at Main Street and Bridgehead Road, according to the Oakley Police Department.
The car, a gray Honda, and a gun left in it were reported stolen Sunday in Oakland.
Antioch officers ended their pursuit before the Honda entered Oakley, but an Oakley officer then chased the car down Main Street and past nearly half a dozen major intersections.
“The driver of the stolen Honda drove in excessive speeds during the entire pursuit,” police said in a news release.
A sergeant called off the chase after the boy turned right onto southbound O’Hara Avenue, police said. Seconds later, the boy collided with another motorist at Laurel Road.
The motorist, identified as a 50-year-old Oakley man, suffered fatal injuries. The driver of the Honda and two passengers, also boys, were hospitalized with major injuries.
Police said they are conducting a parallel investigation into the fatal incident with the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office and the California Highway Patrol, per protocol.
“This is a tragic incident,” police said. “The city of Oakley extends its deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of the driver who lost his life in this senseless incident.”
