Oracle chops well over 100 Bay Area jobs

Oracle America has decided to slash more than 188 jobs in the Bay Area, affecting workers in the Peninsula and East Bay, according to the state Employment Development Department.

Described as permanent, the reductions will affect 143 workers in Redwood City and another 45 in Pleasanton, according to the EDD. The cuts are scheduled for Oct. 13.

Oracle previously made staffing reductions in 2017 and 2020.

The layoff announcement by Oracle follows similar recent disclosures by Altera in San Jose, which cut 82 jobs; and Block, previously known as Square, which eliminated 240 jobs at its office hub in Oakland’s Uptown district.

The most recent bout of layoffs have occurred at a time when job losses for the Bay Area tech industry are starting to abate.

During January-through-March, the Bay Area lost a net total of 12,000 tech jobs. From April-through-June, it lost 6,300, according to seasonally adjusted estimates that Beacon Economics derived from the official monthly state EDD jobs reports for California and its metro regions.

The South Bay has lost 5,100 tech jobs in 2025, with 5,000 in the first quarter and 100 in the second, this news organization’s analysis of the Beacon and EDD reports shows.

The San Francisco-San Mateo region slashed 9,000 tech jobs during the first half of 2025 – 5,000 in the first quarter and 4,000 in the second.

The East Bay shed 3,800 tech jobs over the first six months of 2025, with 1,700 in the first quarter and 2,100 in the second.
